Some jobs can wait for a weekday and some really cannot. If you notice any of the signs below, it is worth picking up the phone straight away.

Water you cannot stop. A burst pipe or a flexi hose letting go under the sink will keep flooding until the mains are shut, so turn off the water at the meter and call.

A drain backing up. Waste rising in a gully, shower or toilet points to a blockage downstream, and on the low streets a storm can make it worse in a hurry.

No hot water at all. A unit gone cold overnight, or one weeping from the base, usually needs looking at before it fails outright or floods the cupboard it sits in.

The smell of gas. If you smell gas, leave the property and call from outside, and do not flick switches or light flames until it has been checked.

A spike in the water bill. A bill that climbs with no change in habits often points to a hidden leak under the slab or out in the yard, well worth chasing before it grows.

A cold shower is nobody's idea of a good morning, so our hot water service spans quick repairs, tired-unit swap-outs and brand-new installs.

Units near the end. Plenty of pre-war cottages and post-war brick homes still run tanks well past their prime, and salt-laden air off the bay wears the exposed fittings faster than it would inland.

Gas, electric or instant. We weigh running cost, roof and wall space and the size of the household with you, then fit the system that genuinely suits the house rather than the one on special.

Sized for the household. A family of five and a couple at home share nothing when it comes to demand, so we match the tank or the continuous unit to how you actually live.

Repair or replace. A single failed valve is worth fixing, but a rusting tank on borrowed time is money down the drain, and we will tell you plainly which one you are looking at.

Summer. Salt-laden sea breezes off the water corrode exposed pipework and tanks, so late spring is a smart time to check fittings before the heat properly arrives.

Storm season. When the rain comes hard, the shallow sand aquifer sits close to the surface and the low streets clear slowly, which is when drains and gully traps surcharge.

Winter. Older uninsulated cottages lean harder on heating and hot water, and a tired heater likes to give out on the coldest week of the year.
